WATCH Mariah Carey’s New Year’s Eve Fiasco MELTDOWN

Things were bad though she tried to “own it.” Does that make it any better?

Often with live outdoor performances, music superstars lip sync a bit through more challenging portions of their performance. Factors like crowds and the weather make lip syncing an attractive option and generally, it improves the entertainment experience for everyone.

Unfortunately, for Mariah Carey, her New Year’s Rockin’ Eve performance tape did not go at all as planned. It appears that Mariah sang the song intro herself, then, at the 1:10 mark in the video, was planning to lip sync the 90’s hit, Emotion. There was a problem with the tape, so Mariah tried to imply that she could not hear through her earpiece. Many believe that the lyrics were actually dropped from the recording, causing Mariah to just walk around and talk and stammer. She tried to keep it together, though the event is being called a fiasco.

Mariah said things like, “I’m just being a good sport here,” and “it went to number one and that’s what is is.” She said that she would “let the audience sing.” The moment was awkward, to say the least.

Twitter is roasting the event, with some saying that 2016 claimed its final victim in Mariah Carey.

Carey headlined the festivities in Times Square, where about a million revelers jammed in to greet the new year.

A representative for the singer confirmed there were technical difficulties.

“It was kinda like the ‘Saturday Night Live’ performance,’’ said Leslie Keeley told The New York Post, referring to Ashlee Simpson’s infamous out-of-sync turn on “SNL” in 2004. “The end of 2016 was not good for Mariah.’’

Carey took to Instagram after the performance saying, “Here’s to making more headlines in 2017.”
